Hybrid working is a new concept we’ve all become familiar with in the last few years as the global pandemic changes how and where we work.
For many of us, working from home has become a regular event even if it’s combined with time at your place of business.
Auckland University of Technology Business School Professor Jarrod Haar says a recent study shows nearly half of the New Zealand workforce is now working from home and office on a 50-50 basis.
Crucially, hybrid workers are shown to be happy and innovative employees so this era ushered in by Covid may continue for some time.
So, let’s look at some ways to help you work effectively at home.
Many of our Generation Homes plans include dedicated computer nooks, either off the dining room or nestled in the hallway. This is a practical solution to create the right atmosphere for a work-friendly space.
Some of our plans include a study or office, sometimes as separate rooms, and other times with the dual-purpose of a fourth or fifth bedroom or a working area.
Of course, many people choose to decorate and furnish a guest bedroom as a workspace away from household distractions.
Decorating the area where you work helps create an inspiring environment, plus it plays a vital role in your productivity and wellbeing.
Depending on your personality, you may prefer to keep it simple and soothing or use a bold coloured feature wall to motivate you.
No matter the décor – it’s important to have a comfortable chair and to introduce some greenery and natural light.
If you like to be organised, storage needs to be considered for an uncluttered workspace and it’s good to shut things away after a long day. A few shelves, a cupboard or a filing cabinet can keep the desk area clear and hide equipment.
Multifunctional furniture serves a purpose – desks with built-in storage or tables that can be turned into desks help maximise your drawer, shelf and surface space.
You may be sharing your home workspace as it’s common for two or more people from the same household to work or study from home.
Use furniture and decorative elements to give everyone their own personal space, even if it’s in the same room. And invest in some good headphones so meetings can be relatively private and non-intrusive!
If you’re joining in a lot of video meetings, remember to set up a neutral backdrop so your companions can remain anonymous.
When the space is available, it’s a good idea to set up a relaxing spot where you can sit down and fuel your creative thinking if being perched at your desk isn’t doing the trick.
If you’re working at the dining table or in the family room, ensure you are comfortable, have good light and there’s the right ambience for you to concentrate.
Occasionally setting up at the kitchen island or another counter is a simple way to include a stand-up desk in your workspace.
